JOB DESCRIPTION FOR JVP CAMPUS ORGANIZER

The JVP Campus Organizer is responsible for supporting the national student movement for Palestinian rights, and supporting Jewish students to form JVP chapters and strengthen their organizing for Palestinian rights on college campuses across the country. 

The Campus Organizer will serve as a member of the JVP Organizing Team and is responsible for designing and executing our strategy to develop student leaders, campus chapters and JVP’s relationship to the national student movement for Palestinian rights.

The Campus Organizer is a bridge: between national resources, platform, and strategy-setting, and the grassroots vision, campaigns, and leaders in our campus chapters. They give voice to campus work within national conversations while also framing campus work within a broader national context. 

Main Responsibilities:

 Chapter Development,Leadership Development, and Basebuilding
  • Support existing JVP campus chapters, facilitate the formation of additional JVP chapters, and help Jewish students use their voices, as Jews on campus, to advocate for Palestinian rights    
  • Develop the leadership of student leaders within JVP and SJP chapters
  • Coordinate winter break student retreat for core student leaders     
  • Engage larger JVP community, including faculty, alumni, and community-based chapters in supporting campus organizing
  • Support Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) and similar campus groups across the country, in their campaigns to pressure their universities to divest from corporations complicit in Israel’s human rights abuses, and similar BDS campaigns
  • Support and expand the national JVP Student Network

Campus Backlash
  • Support JVP responses to urgent campus events
  • Support SJP and similar groups on campus when they come under attack from pro-Israel backlash organizations

Campaign Development 
  • Support strategy and logistics for student-led divestment campaigns
  • Support students in developing and escalating the Return the Birthright campaign, calling on Jewish students and young Jews to boycott Birthright

Other responsibilities
  • Represent JVP on national working groups related to campus organizing
  • When needed, respond to media requests as spokesperson for JVP campus program, and support students to do the same
  • Participate in JVP fundraising campaigns  and member drives 
  • Travel required

Required Qualifications
We’re seeking candidates who excel in relationship-building, are results-oriented, and have strong project management skills. You should have:
 
  • a demonstrated commitment to meeting a high bar and a history of getting things done even in the face of obstacles, and the ability to handle, keep track of, and follow-through on multiple projects at once
  • the ability to work as part of a team, with excellent interpersonal skills
  • the ability to develop relationships with lots of different kinds of people across different kinds of campuses and constituencies - from large public state schools to small private liberal arts schools, from different backgrounds and affiliations  
  • the ability to build and maintain a warm, collaborative community, and to support young Jews as they develop their politics and voices around Israel/Palestine
  • excellent written and communication skills 
  • familiarity with or ability to quickly learn Google Suite

Preferred Qualifications
The ideal candidate will also have: 
  • Knowledge of the different organizations across the political spectrum who are involved in Palestine solidarity and pro-Israel advocacy on college campuses
  • Experience running organizing campaigns, and/or grassroots organizing experience
  • Familiarity with Jewish Voice for Peace as an organization, participation in JVP events and actions
  • Experience in popular education, leadership development and/or mentorship
  • Experience budgeting for a program, event or student club

Compensation:  This is an exempt, salaried full time position. The salary is in the low fifties with a generous benefits package.  

Location: The Organizer can work from anywhere in the United States with organizational support to set-up a home office, or to share space with aligned organizations. Preference for an organizer based in Oakland or NYC.
